Adding a Lining to an Unlined Pattern: Quick & Easy (Non-Waterproof) Way
If you want to add a lining to a sewing pattern, particularly a coat or jacket, but don't need to worry about waterproof fabric, this method is great. It is quick and easy and you get an extra layer of warmth or protection. This method is also sometimes called "underlining". It is also a great way to add an extra insulating layer to your coat or jacket (place insulating layer between outer and lining layers). This method does not hide seams, so you will have seams showing on the inside. You can finish them with zigzag stitches, serging, or binding (Hong Kong finish).
Cut out Outer Shell and Lining using Outer Shell pattern pieces. Omit pockets and other decorative trim from Lining. If garment has collar, cuffs or waistband, cut all these pieces out of outer fabric.
With wrong sides together, zigzag each Outer Shell and Lining piece together before construction and treat as one layer of fabric. Do not zigzag collar, cuff or waistband pieces together.
If insulating garment, place insulation pieces between Outer Shell and Lining pieces before zigzagging together. Be sure to size up at least one size to accommodate
bulk of insulation.
